This region was thought to be the largest industrial complex in the world in the sixteenth century. Hydraulic mills were used in succession to extract silver ore. The site includes several patrician homes, the colonial town with the Casa de la Moneda, the Church of San Lorenzo, the industrial monuments of the Cerro Rico, where water is supplied by a complex network of aqueducts and artificial lakes, and the barrios mitayos, where the laborers lived.
