Decorated Grottoes of the Vézère Valley - France – UNESCO World Heritage Site
Issue Year: 1968
Issue Year: 1981
The Vézère Valley contains 147 prehistoric sites dating to the palaeolithic era and 25 decorated caves. It is particularly interesting from an ethnological and anthropologic, as well as aesthetic point of view, with its cave paintings, especially those of the Lascaux cave, whose discovery in 1940 was an important date in the history of prehistoric art. Its hunting scenes contain about 100 animal figures, remarkable for their detail, the richness of their colours and their life-like quality.
